US Time, right now—
India Time (IST), right now—

Why the gap moves twice a year

India Standard Time never changes. It's a fixed UTC+5:30 all year, with no daylight saving. The four continental US zones each shift an hour in March and November, so the gap between any of them and India shifts too:

  • Eastern: 10.5 hours behind IST (standard) · 9.5 hours behind (daylight)
  • Central: 11.5 hours behind IST (standard) · 10.5 hours behind (daylight)
  • Mountain: 12.5 hours behind IST (standard) · 11.5 hours behind (daylight)
  • Pacific: 13.5 hours behind IST (standard) · 12.5 hours behind (daylight)

The widget above doesn't use this list directly; it reads live offsets from your browser, so it's never a season behind. The list is just a quick reference if you don't want to touch the form.

Questions people ask

Why does the US-India gap change twice a year?
India doesn't observe daylight saving, so IST stays fixed at UTC+5:30 year-round. The US zones shift an hour each spring and fall, so the gap to India moves with them: Eastern is 9.5 hours behind IST in summer (daylight time) and 10.5 hours behind in winter (standard time). Central, Mountain, and Pacific follow the same pattern, each just offset from Eastern by its own base difference.
Is there any overlap between a US workday and an Indian workday?
Barely, and only on one side of the country. With a roughly 9.5-10.5 hour gap, a 9am-6pm Indian workday ends around 11:30pm-12:30am US Eastern the same evening, so the only real overlap is early morning US time against late evening India time, or vice versa. Pacific time has essentially none. Most US-India teams end up scheduling around one side's early morning or late evening rather than a shared midday.
Does this account for daylight saving automatically?
Yes. The conversion above reads each zone's current UTC offset directly from your browser's time zone database at the moment you load the page, rather than a number typed in once and left to go stale. It's correct the day after a DST change, not just the day it launched.
What's the single most useful number here if I just want one?
Eastern Time (the zone covering New York, most East Coast offices, and most US business hours overlap with the rest of the world) is 10.5 hours behind India Standard Time in winter and 9.5 hours behind in summer. If someone says "US time" without specifying a zone, Eastern is the safest default guess.
